While the Australian and US employment markets are very different they do share enough similarities for this article from US News to be a concern to everyone.
According to Adecco’s latest workplace survey, 54 percent are getting ready to start looking elsewhere. No surprise really that the itch to move on is highest among the youngest workers. Adecco reports 71 percent of 18-to-29 year olds plan to look for a new job in the recovery.

In early June Seek released their latest round of labour market statistics, showing some interesting trends. Firstly that the employment marketing might in fact be turning around. Second that the Australian Government’s prediction of 8.5% unemployment will prove wrong.
The evidence is clearest in new job ads registered with SEEK. Between August 2008 and March 2009 new job ads (seasonally adjusted) fell by 44.2%, at a monthly rate of 6.6%. While job ads continued to fall in April and May 2009, the rate of change has slowed significantly to only 1.9% in May.

So my suggestion, conduct research on LinkedIn. (Note: I am excluding your existing network and job postings.)
Why?
Well you can see which companies to approach as part of a cold calling process but more importantly find a potential contact who can introduce you to the organisation. Remember many roles are filled through word of mouth.
Here’s how.
Let’s say the software in question was SAP.
Conduct …

The interview with the hiring organisation is make or break time in the job search process. Organisations tend to only interview a very selected short list of candidates, so you are within a select few who might be offered the job. You do not want to get removed from the list, just because you did not interview very well.
Remember during the interview the organisation is trying to determine what unique skills or traits do you bring, do you meet or even exceed the expectations of the role, and finally do …

While recruiters have always background checked candidates, you the candidate can now conduct comprehensive research on the recruiter, hiring manager and employer in a way that was never before possible. Using search engines you can delve beyond the glassy corporate brochures and web sites to see what employees, customers and competitors are saying about the organisation. By researching the organisation you can determine many different aspects that might not be so obvious from the organisation’s web site.
In addition to using general search engines tools such as Glassdoor allows the anonymous …

Losing your job can be one of the most devastating and fear ridden times in a person’s life.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Losing your job can also be a fantastic opportunity to refocus your career, start a business, gain new skills or just take some time out.
Before you can move on from job loss you need to understand the emotions that you will experience. For many their job defines who they are as a person, provides them with influence, reputation, control and of course an income. The loss …
